You can feel the difference immediately. The drugstore sets I used to buy have a hard moulded ridge round the edge and a plasticky sheen. These are filed smooth all the way round and the surface has actual depth. It's not subtle once you've held both.

I put mine under a lamp because I wanted to see if it was really hand painted and you can SEE the brush direction. Tiny variations between the ten. That's not a flaw, that's the entire point, and it's why they don't look like everyone else's.
The edges are the giveaway. Nothing catches on my hair, nothing snags on a jumper. With cheaper sets I'd be filing the sides down before I could wear them.
The finish isn't that flat glassy topcoat look you get on mass produced sets. There's a depth to it, more like a really good gel manicure than a plastic overlay. That's the bit that makes people ask where I had them done.
Wore these to a family lunch and my aunt, who has been getting acrylics for twenty years, asked which salon I'd switched to. I told her they came in the post and she didn't believe me.
A designed set at my salon is well over $100 and even a plain colour is $65, then it's grown out in a fortnight. I worked out what I was spending in a year and stopped fairly quickly after that.
I rotate three sets and re wear each of them. Take them off gently, clean them, back in the box. They still look right on the third wear.
Ordered a milky lilac fully expecting purple. It's the milky lilac. After enough online colour disappointments you start to treat that as a feature.
Machine made sets are quick and cheap and I still keep a couple around. But they're built for an average hand and painted by a printer. Different product really, once you've worn both.
